While it can be taken to a bicycle shop and fixed, sometimes it can be an inconvenience if the shop is busy and your bike needs to be left overnight, or longer. If your bicycle is your main mode of transportation or if you ride one for fitness, the chances are it will need to be frequently repaired. Raleigh Bikes Talus 2 Recreational Mountain Bike, Black

If you want a bike to try out road riding, or want a bike you can do a lot on that doesn't cost a thousand bucks, few deliver the same value as this one.BEIOU 2017 Full Carbon Fat Tire Bicycle Fat Mountain Bike 26 Inch 4.0". The AL1 is as smooth as reliable as bikes that cost hundreds more (and has better components than some of those bikes too). I rode the bike on 25-mile hilly rides, to spin around town, and on busy-road commutes back and forth to work. But the cost savings are real, and the performance is good. And you won't get the service of brand sold through a local bike shop.

The bike can only be ordered directly from Nashbar, which means it shows up at your door (or wherever you have it delivered) in a box and will require you to install your front wheel, stem, and handlebar. But things like wheels and tires (and handlebar and seatpost) are easy to swap if you want your bike to shed weight. In places where Nashbar favored durability or low cost, you gain some weight. Nashbar did a great job choosing reliable parts and keeping the overall price down. The white frame, understated logos, and matching saddle and tape get noticed.

It rides better and looks better than the brand name and price tag would suggest. With the Al1, you get a smooth, comfortable, well-behaving, reliable bike for $500. It's responsive enough that you can maneuver around traffic in the, and there's enough stability to lean into corners when you're on a road ride. You don't have to be super flexible to reach the handlebar, nor do you feel super upright, like you're riding a tricycle. That puts you in a relatively comfortable, natural riding position. It's a bit longer with less aggressive angles than some racier models (and it falls in between competitors-Giant's $635 Contend 3 has a shorter wheelbase and Trek's $800 Domane AL 2 is just a little longer). Nashbar's bike product manager Bob Kristen said that the AL1 is not for hardcore road riders, but for those who are newer to road riding and want to get out on adventures with their friends. But for most riders commuting or heading out on shorter, less speedy road rides, durability might be a more important consideration than low weight. But I could also feel that extra weight on even small inclines. They held up great on my test rides and stayed true over the miles. With 32 spokes, built in a 3-cross pattern, the wheels have a lot of strength, but that also adds weight. Saddles are pretty easy to swap out if this one doesn't work for you. For me, it also created some odd pressure points on longer rides. The exterior is more slippery than some, so I slid around more than I'd like. The AL1 also comes with a name brand Selle Royal saddle that I found uncomfortable. Other Components We Like (and Some We Don't) For a bike that might be used for a lot of commuting and city riding, or on gravel paths, it would be nice to have a little more clearance. The bike comes with 25c tires, but can fit tires up to 28c. There's decent, but not ample tire clearance. This one has an aluminum steerer and carbon blades, but even that's rare to see on bikes that cost this little. It's pretty basic tubing, without butting to save weight, but it looks well put together and there's nice shaping in the seat stays, which seem to contribute to the bike's smooth ride.Īlso helping lessen road vibrations is the bike's carbon fork. The AL1's aluminum frame weighs less than most steel models, which you often find at this price. Up front, the AL1 comes with a pretty standard 50/34 compact chainring setup attached to non-Shimano aluminum cranks. However, you lose some low-end gearing, which means you have to work harder to get the bike up hills. With a smaller inner gear (25t vs 34t), you have shorter gaps between gears, which makes shifts easier and faster. The group can work with a cassette with up to 34 teeth, which makes pedaling easier, but the AL1 comes with a 12-25t option.
